Accessorial Charges

November 15, 2016 by InterChez in InterChez, Tips To Ship By

What are accessorial charges? They are extra fees included on freight invoices for performing services beyond normal pickup and delivery from point A to point B.

Accessorial charges can be found in the carrier’s rules tariff. If you know your shipment will include one or more of these fees, you should outline the fees up front when you are getting your quotes. You can have these fees added into your cost prior to shipping so there are no surprises when you receive your invoice. Some of the most common accessorial fees are:

Accessorial charges weight changes

Weight Changes

Oversized/Extreme Length

Tolls

Hazmat

Storage

Border Crossing Fee

As well as:

  • Liftgate
  • Inside Delivery
  • Notify Before Delivery
  • Inspection
  • Detention

  • Reconsignment
  • Redelivery
  • Stop-off
  • Limited Access
  • Residential Delivery
  • Truck Order Not Used
  • Protect from freeze
  • Extra Labor
  • In-bond
  • Homeland Security

By providing accurate data on your bill of lading such as weights, dimensions, freight class, and correct pickup and delivery addresses, you will avoid fees that could be applied to your invoice. By being accurate and more efficient, you give carriers less opportunity to add on additional and unexpected accessorial charges.
